We invite you to attend our fourth annual Evening in the East on Thursday, Feb. 16, at Old Brick. This event will feature a musical recital by Paul Barnes, titled "Lizst & the Cross: Music as Sacrament in the B Minor Sonata." Food (free with admission) and silent auction items are from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Georgia, and other places around the world. Evening in the East is a fundraiser for the Orthodox Christian Fellowship and St. Raphael Orthodox Church.
Franz Lizst was a 19th cent. Hungarian pianist, composer, and conductor who became renowned in Europe at large in his own time and influenced other famous composers including Richard Wagner. Barnes' provocative recital explores the intimate relationship between Lizst's understanding of the sacramental nature of music and Orthodox iconographic tradition. Barnes' presentation includes the singing of Gregorian chant, an examination of iconography relating to Liszt, and a performance of Liszt's greatest composition, the Sonata in B Minor.
