Voters' Meeting Results

The voting members of St. Raphael Mission voted by a strong majority (84%), to approve the mortgage for the purchase of the new building, and also to approve a budget to reflect the financial realities of the purchase and move. We are scheduled to sign the closing papers and take possession of the building on Friday, February 27.

Our First Service in our New Building

Although it will be awhile before we can worship regularly in our new building (Pascha?), we invite all to join us this Saturday February 28 at 1PM for a Lesser Blessing of the Waters service at 722 E. College St. Bishop MARK has asked that this be our first service in the new building, and so we will bless it with holy water to prepare the building spiritually for our ownership and use of it. Come join us for this happy and important occasion.

OCF Gathering

Before Lent starts, our OCF advisor, Lori Branch, is opening up her home for food and fellowship. Students are invited to the Branch/Peterson home (831 Dearborn St.) on Friday, February 27. At 10PM, students will leave Lori's and go to 722 E. College St., our new building, to pray an outdoors Akathist to our patron, St. Raphael, on the day of his repose.

First Sunday of the Month Potluck

Next Sunday March 1 is the first Sunday of the month and so we will have a potluck meal after Liturgy. A sign-up sheet is posted.

Free Lunch Program Volunteering

St. Raphael Church members are scheduled to help at the Free Lunch Program on Tuesday, March 3 from 11:30AM-1:30PM. Please let Fr. Ignatius know if you can volunteer this month.

Thank you to all who gave so generously during our Phase I of the Capital Campaign. We end this portion of our fundraising with a remarkable $180,222.72. May God bless you all.

New Calendars Available

The March-April St. Raphael Church calendars are now available to be picked up at church.

House Blessing Schedule

Time is running out to schedule a house blessing with Fr. Ignatius before the beginning of Lent (March 1). Fr. Ignatius would like to visit as many of you in your homes as possible during this time. A sign-up sheet is posted at church. Please suggest a day and time and Fr. Ignatius will confirm if that time will work.

Lent is Coming

Lent begins this year with Forgiveness Vespers at 6PM on Sunday, March 1. The first week of Lent is busy with services. Here is the schedule:
  • Sunday, March 1- Forgiveness Vespers, 6PM
  • Monday, March 2- Compline with the Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, 7PM
  • Tuesday, March 3- Compline with the Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, 7PM
  • Wednesday, March 4- Presanctified Liturgy, 6PM, followed by soup supper
  • Thursday, March 5- Compline with Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, 7PM
  • Friday, March 6- Compline with Akathist Hymn to the Theotokos, 7PM

Pan-Orthodox Vespers

The Iowa Orthodox Christian Clergy Association (IOCCA) is sponsoring Sunday evening pan-Orthodox Vespers services at 5:30PM (note the new time) throughout Lent. The faithful of St. Raphael Church, and both St. George Church and St. John the Baptist Church of Cedar Rapids will be worshipping together at each other's churches. St. Raphael Church is hosting the Sunday of Orthodoxy Vespers on March 8. We will need food provided for this evening. A schedule of these services is attached to this email.

Pre-Sanctified Liturgies

On Wednesday evenings during Lent, we will celebrate the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy at 6PM, except on March 25, when we will have a Vesperal Liturgy for the Annunciation. The sermons during the Pre-Sanctified Liturgies will focus on the Anaphora prayer of St. Basil's Liturgy. Each Wednesday evening service service will be followed by a simple lenten soup supper. We need volunteers to bring the soup each week. A sign-up sheet is posted at church for these meals.

Arabic language class rescheduled

Due to our Lenten schedule of services, Arabic class will shift to Monday nights during Lent, beginning on March 16. There will be no classes during the weeks of March 1-14.

Orthodox Parenting Retreat

The Iowa Orthodox Christian Clergy Association is happy to bring Kh. Maggie Hock to Cedar Rapids for a one-day retreat on Saturday, April 4 at St. George Church. Kh. Maggie is the Director of the Dept. of Marriage and Parish Family Ministries of the Antiochian Archdiocese. She will present on parenting and raising families on a path to holiness, based on the writings of St. Theophan. Please make plans to be at St. George on April 4 for what promises to be an enriching, edifying experience.

Baby Shower

You are cordially invited to a baby shower for Andrea Goodell, Sunday, March 8 from 2-4PM at 831 Dearborn St., Iowa City, hosted by the Women's Group of St. Raphael Orthodox Church. Daily Akathist to Continue Through February 27

The sign-up for members to pledge to pray an Akathist at home each day during our Capital Campaign will continue until February 27, our scheduled date for closing on the property, now that our deadline has been extended. Whether you sign-up to pray an Akathist or not, will you pray that God would reveal to us His plans for our location?

Book Sale to Benefit Shelter House

A book sale will be held at Hope United Methodist Church, located at 2929 E. Court Street, on Saturday, February 28, from 10AM to 3PM. All proceeds will go to benefit the Shelter House, the local temporary shelter for those who have no place to live. If you have books that you would like to donate, please contact Meg at 338-5416 ext. 112.

Holy Bread and Coffee Hour

We need a volunteer to provide the Holy Bread for Sunday, March 1. Food for coffee hour will be brought by everyone who brings food for our first Sunday of the month potluck.
