Many Years!-
Many years to Carol Gilliam who was received into the Orthodox Church through chrismation at liturgy today.  She took St. Photini as her patron.  Gail Grigg was Carol's sponsor.

No Monday or Wednesday Matins-
This week, there will be no matins on Monday or Wednesday.

Fr. Ignatius Will Be Traveling-

From Wednesday June 15 through Sunday June 19, Fr. Ignatius will be attending the Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest's annual Parish Life Conference which is hosted by St. George Orthodox Church of Cleveland, OH this year.  He can be reached on his cell phone (319-400-7522) during this time.  If you need immediate pastoral help, you may contact Fr. Elias Khouri at 319-329-2562.

During this week following Pentecost (June 12-19), there is no fasting on Wednesday and Friday in honor of the Feast of Pentecost and in anticipation of the Apostle's Fast which begins Monday, June 20 and ends with the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul on Wednesday, June 29.  If you have any questions about the exact fasting rules during this period, consult the printed St. Raphael calendar or talk with Fr. Ignatius.
Thank you-
Thank you to Irakliy and Luka Surguladze and Rezo Gvarjaladze for the cement repair work on the front steps of church.
Parish Camping Trip/Liturgy in the Park-
On Father's Day weekend, we will have services and meals together outdoors at lovely secluded FW Kent Park, 3 miles west of Iowa City on Hwy. 6.  The camping is free, but those camping need to bring their own tents and sleeping bags. Sign up sheets and maps are available at church. We now have room for a total of 40 campers.  A map to the campground and shelter is attached.  Even if you don't come for the camping, please come for our regular liturgy.  Please welcome Fr. Elias Khouri and Fr. Lev Smith, who will be concelebrating on Sunday in Fr. Ignatius's absence.  The schedule for the weekend is as follows:

Sat. June 18, Noon: Camping opens at Youth Camp Area #5. *Please sign up at church if you will be camping overnight.
Sat. June 18, 6pm: Vespers at the Bob White Shelter.  Cookout and camping overnight for those who wish.
Sun. June 19, 8:45 Matins, 10 am Liturgy, at the Bob White Shelter.  Regular coffee hour meal/potluck/cookout afterwards, followed by fun and fishing for kids.

Episcopal Elections-
At the Archdiocese Convention which will be held in Chicago from July 25-31, among the decisions to be made, the clergy and lay delegates will be nominating two episcopal candidates who will then be elected by the Synod of Bishops.  Unless another existing bishop is transferred to our Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest, it is likely that one of the two men elected will become our new bishop.  The seven candidates are: Rt. Rev. Archimandrite John Abdalah, Rt. Rev. Archimandrite Michel Boghos, Rev. Jeremy Davis, Rt. Rev. Archimandrite Daniel Griffith, Rt. Rev. Archimandrite Daniel Keller, Rt. Rev. Archimandrite Anthony Michaels and Rt. Rev. Archimandrite Nicholas Ozone.  Copies of the biographies of each of the candidates are available in the narthex.  Fr. Ignatius is interested in any opinions members of St. Raphael Church have on these candidates.  Your voice matters in this process and Fr. Ignatius will take your opinions into consideration when he casts votes in July.
Parish Council Meeting-
The June 2011 Parish Council meeting will be on Monday, June 13 at 7PM.  All are welcome to attend.

Food For Thought-

They who had once been afraid became emboldened, and filled with joy were they that loved the Lord and Savior when the Spirit descended on this day from heaven.  He came and rested upon the disciples' heads, and each spake unto the peoples in other tongues.  For lo, tongues as it were of fire were seen divided in their midst, and yet this fire consumed them not, but refreshed and rained dew on them.
