Dormition Fast-
In order to properly prepare for the great feast of the Dormition, when we celebrate the falling asleep of the Holy Theotokos, we have now entered into a short season of fasting which lasts from August 1-14.  Please speak with Fr. Ignatius is you have any questions about this fasting period.
Baptism of Lucia Johnson-
All are invited to witness the baptism of Lucia Johnson at 9AM on Sunday, August 15.  The baptism will replace the matins service that day.
OCF Welcome Baskets-
Our parish is putting together "welcome baskets" for all our new and returning college students.  We will distribute these on Sun. Aug. 22 & Sun. Aug. 29 after liturgy, to express our love and support for these students and their families.  We hope to make 12 baskets and involve as many families as possible!  To contribute, please prepare 12 of whatever you would like to donate: packages of popcorn, pizza gift certificates, pencils, notepads, you name it - anything a college student might like.  Feel free to put a little tag on it that says it is from your family. We will save unused materials for future semesters.  Please give your donations to our OCF sponsor, Lori Peterson Branch, at church by Sun. Aug. 15, or call (339-7581) & drop them by her house later that week.
Blessing for Students-
As the school year gets underway, Fr. Ignatius will bless with oil from the vigil lamp which hangs at the relics of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco, all students who wish to come forward at the end of Liturgy on August 22.
"Out of the Darkness" Community Walk-
The Johnson County Suicide Prevention Coalition is hosting their first ever "Out of the Darknes Walk" on Sunday, August 22 at 6PM in City Park.  Walkers are encouraged to seek friends, family and co-workers to sponsor them and to walk in memory of someone who has committed suicide.  Registration information is available on The Crisis Center's website at www.jccrisiscenter.org.

All-Parish Potluck-
On Sunday, August 29 (the fifth Sunday of the month) we ask that everyone plan on bringing a dish to pass for our fellowship hour food.  Since this is the Feast of the Beheading of St. John the Forerunnner, it is a fasting day so please, no meat, dairy or eggs.
You Are Invited-
Fr. Fred, Khourieh Michelle and family invite you to celebrate the baptism of Eirene Sophia Shaheen Saturday, September 18 at 10:30 am at St. George Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids.  Lunch reception following in the Michael G. Nassif Education and Cultural Center.  Fr. Fred needs an accurate count for the caterer, so please confirm that you are attending by signing the sheet on the bulletin board at the top of the stairs.
Thoughts on Stewardship-
From the third-century document Didascalia Apostolorum … “Set aside part offerings and tithes and first fruits to Christ, the true High Priest, and to His ministers, even tithes of salvation to Him. . . . Today the oblations are offered through the bishops to the Lord God. For they are your high priests; but the priests and Levites are now the presbyters and deacons, and the orphans and widows. . . . Your fruits and the work of your hands present to him, that you may be blessed; your first fruits and your tithes and your vows and your part offerings give to him; for he has need of them that he may be sustained, and that he may dispense also to those who are in want, to each as is just for him.”
Do You Have a Prayer Request?
Please give it to Fr. Ignatius and he will distribute it by email to all those on the Prayer Chain.  If you wish to join the Prayer Chain, please let Fr. Ignatius know.
Choir Leadership-
On Saturday, August 14, Lori Branch will direct the choir for Great Vespers.  Lori will also direct the choir on Sunday, August 15.
Coffee Hour-
On Sunday, August 15, the St. Nina team is responsible for bringing food for coffee hour and for cleaning up the fellowship hall afterward.
Church Cleaning-
During the week following Sunday, August 15, the St. Nicholas team will be responsible for cleaning the nave, narthex, stairs and bathrooms of the church.
Food For Thought-
Of the vault of the heavens art Thou, O Lord, fashioner. So too of the Church are Thou founder.  Do Thou establish me in unfeigned love for Thee, Who art the height of things sought for, and staff of the faithful, O Thou only Friend of Man.
I have thee as a shelter and the defense of my life.  Thee, the Theotokos and Virgin, pilot and govern me into thy sheltered port, for thou art author of good things and staff of the faithful, O thou only lauded one.
I beseech thee O Virgin, do dispel far from me all of the distress of despair and turbulence in my soul, for thou, O Bride of God, hast given birth to the Lord Christ, who is the Prince of Peace, O thou only All-Blameless One.
Since thou briught forth Him who is our benefactor and cause of good from the wealth of thy lovingkindness, do thou pour forth on all, for thou canst do all things, being one mighty in power, for thou gavenst birth to Christ.  Blessed of God art thou.
With most grievous diseases and with corrupt passions too, I am put to trial O Virgin.  Come thou unto my aid, for I know thee to be an inexhaustible treasure of unfailing healing, O Thou, the All-Blameless One.
