Upcoming Events and Announcements

Orthodox Christian Fellowship College Group-
On October 24, the OCF will meet at church for compline at 7PM and a discussion to follow.  Check the printed or online church calendars for future events and/or speak with the faculty advisor, Lori Branch, or the student leader, Tyler Fyotek.

Wednesday Evening Class on "Orthodox Beliefs and Practices about Death"-
Beginning October 16 and continuing October 23, 30 and November 6, Fr. Ignatius will lead a class titled "Orthodox Beliefs and Practices about Death."  The class will begin following the Akathist service (about 7:45PM) and go to 9PM.  Come and learn about the Orthodox funeral service, why we pray for the departed, traditional ways to care for a loved one at the time of death and more.  Fr. Ignatius hopes that this class will cause a discussion that will lead to a group of people at our church who will work to form an Orthodox burial society, if and when the need arises within our community.  Dovetailing nicely with the subject matter of this class, Lori Branch Peterson will be hosting a book discussion on "A Christian Ending: A Handbook for Burial in the Ancient Christian Tradition" by Deacon Mark and Elizabeth Barna on Sunday, November 17.  Copies of this book are available for purchase in our bookstore.

Upcoming Teen SOYO Events-
The Teen SOYO will meet for dinner and a movie at 6:30PM on Monday, October 21.  They will participate in the semi-annual Adopt-A-Highway clean-up of I-80 from 1PM-5PM on Saturday, November 2.

Fall Clean-up Day is October 26-
We will have our semi-annual church cleaning day on Saturday, October 26 from 1PM-4PM.  On that day, please consider coming for all or part of the afternoon to help polish metal liturgical items, rake our yard and do other cleaning chores.  Help us beautify our church!

St. Raphael Feast Day Services Nov. 1 and 2-
We will observe the patronal feast of our parish with Great Vespers/Litia/Artoklasia on Friday, November 1 at 7PM and matins and Divine Liturgy at 8:30AM and 10AM on Saturday, November 2.  Please come to one or more services and celebrate our patron saint!

Kitten Feeding Help Needed-
Jeremy Coffin and Olena Bezugla are looking for a volunteer to go to their house in Tiffin, once a day for about a week, to feed 5 young kittens.  They need this help in early November.  If you are interested in helping them, call Olena at 319-512-8491.

Sunday School Fall Party and Vespers, Nov. 9-
Russ and Becky Morey invite all Sunday School students and their families to come to their home/farm outside of Mt. Pleasant, IA on Saturday, November 9 from 2PM-5PM.  There will be food and fun.  Dress casually and plan on the kids running around outside, getting dirty and seeing some farm animals.  If it has rained recently, boots might be useful.  Food will be provided.  Vespers will be at 4PM.  There will be no vespers at church that day.

The Epistles as Scripture-
To read Fr. Lawrence Farley's enlightening post on why it is that we consider the New Testament Epistles to be Scripture, even though they are not filled with direct commands from God, but are rather (largely) St. Paul's instructions to specific local churches, go to: http://oca.org/reflections/fr.-lawrence-farley/the-epistles-as-scripture

Sign Project Update-
We have now raised $5000 (!) toward purchasing and placing the "Saint Raphael Orthodox Church" sign on the front of our building.  Thank you to all who have given.  We will hopefully be able to adorn our building with the sign soon.

An Opportunity to Serve, Be a Greeter-
Based on responses from the parish survey from a few months ago, the Parish Council has recognized a need to have greeters on duty at church on Sunday mornings.  The greeter's main responsibility will be to make newcomers feel welcome by warmly greeting them, asking them to sign our guestbook and/or newcomer information card, making sure they know bathrooms and coatroom are downstairs and ushering them into the nave of the church.   If you are interested in signing up to be a greeter for a Sunday, there is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board just outside of the bookstore.  On the sheet, is a complete job description for this important position.  If you want our church to be more welcoming to visitors, consider volunteering as a greeter.
Keep Praying for Kidnapped Orthodox Bishops in Syria-
Since April 22, the Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo, Metropolitan Paul, and the Syriac Metropolitan of Aleppo, Youhanna, have been in captivity and have not heard from.  Please pray for their well being and release and also pray for their captors as well.
Do You Have a Prayer Request?
Please give it to Fr. Ignatius and he will distribute it by email to all those on the Prayer Chain. If you wish to join the Prayer Chain, please let Fr. Ignatius know.

Choir Leadership-
During the weekend of October 26-27, Lori Branch will be leading the choir.

Holy Bread-
On Sunday, October 27, the holy bread will be provided by the Peterson/Branch family.  Thank you in advance.

Coffee Hour-
On Sunday October 27, the food for coffee hour and the clean-up of the fellowship hall will be provided by the St. John the Baptist team.

Church Cleaning-
During the week of October 20-26, the St. Raphael team will clean the nave, narthex, bookstore, stairs, nursery and bathrooms.

Food for Thought-

“Let the mouth also fast from disgraceful speeches and railings. For what does it profit if we abstain from fish and fowl and yet bite and devour our brothers and sisters? The evil speaker eats the flesh of his brother and bites the body of his neighbor. ”

St. John Chrysostom
