Vesperal Liturgy for St. Panteleimon-

Thank You from Fr. Maximos-

"Thank you all for participating in our liturgy and ordinations at St. John the Wonderworker Orthodox Church in Des Moines.  We were very blessed by the singing of the choir members of St. Raphael’s together with the people of our mission.  Your presence at the liturgy brought fullness to the music and helped to make it very beautiful and moving.  Many people came to me afterwards and shared how they loved the service!  A special thanks to Lori Branch-Peterson for directing the choir and practices for our hierarchical service. May the relationship of our two parishes continue with love into the future. You all are in my regular prayers. The Lord bless you and keep you!

Fr. Maximos"

Parish-Wide Potluck, July 29-

Instead of one of the four regular food teams, all members are encouraged to bring a dish or drink to share for our fellowship hour following Liturgy, July 29- the fifth Sunday of the month.

Inner River Book Group Meeting, Sunday, July 29-

Lori Branch and Robert Peterson will host a book group meeting on Kyriacos Markides' new book, Inner River: A Pilgrimage to the Heart of Christian Spirituality, on Sunday, July 29, from 7-8:30 pm at their home, 831 Dearborn St., in Iowa City.  Inner River continues Markides' series of uplifting books on the Orthodox spiritual life, based on detailed conversations with a charismatic Athonite monk in Cyrpus. It especially focuses on prayer, inner peace, and the fruits of the Holy Spirit, with practical spiritual advice that can be applied to everyday life. Books are now available for purchase in our bookstore ($15, exact cash or checks made out to "Raphael Books & Gifts"), and everyone is invited to read the book and come prepared to share their thoughts and some good fellowship and conversation.

Food for Thought-

We continually justify ourselves saying, "This is just a trivial sin", and we reassure ourselves: "I will not allow myself to do anything worse."  But bitter experience has shown us all, many times, that once we have begun to give way to sin, it takes possession of us: and then scarcely anyone has the strength to turn back.

Fr. Alexander Elchaninov, "The Diary of a Russian Priest" p. 75.
