Upcoming Events and Announcements

Congratulations to Kh. Michelle and Fr. Fred Shaheen of St. George Church in Cedar Rapids upon the arrival of their new baby daughter Zoe Marie born on August 7.  May God grant her many years!  We rejoice with the Shaheen family upon the arrival of this new gift of life.
Please Welcome Fr. Lev Smith and Fr. Maximos Herman Next Sunday-
Fr. Ignatius will be in Wisconsin next weekend, August 18-19 attending a family wedding, seeing family and visiting his former parish of St. Nicholas Church.  Fr. Lev Smith and Fr. Maximos Herman of St. John the Wonderworker Mission in Des Moines will serve vespers on Saturday, August 18 and matins and Liturgy on Sunday, August 19.  Please welcome them.
August Services/Dormition Fast-
The first two weeks of August are devoted to preparing for the glorious feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God on August 15.  From August 1-14, we fast from meat, dairy, eggs and on week days, also from wine and oil.  We also have an increased number of services during this time, including praying the Paraklesis (consolation) service on most evenings at 7PM.  The service schedule is as follows:
       August 13- Paraklesis, 7PM
August 14- Vesperal Liturgy for the Dormition, 6PM
"Children of Abraham" Interfaith Discussion-
On Sunday, August 26 at 2PM, Fr. Ignatius will participate in an interfaith discussion (Jewish, Christian, Muslim) on the subject of fasting.  This discussion is part of an ongoing series of interfaith discussions known as the Children of Abraham.  The dialogue will be held in Hickock Hall at Coe College (1220 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids).  A poster advertising the event is attached.
Prayers and Anointing for All Students-
On Sunday, August 26, following liturgy, all students (ages 0-99) will be invited to come forward to be prayed for, anointed and blessed at the beginning of the academic year.
Oil and Wine Donations Accepted-
We use a lot of olive oil (regular, not "extra-virgin" or "light") in our vigil lamps that burn on the altar and before the icons.  The church will always gladly accept donations of oil.  We are also accepting donations to purchase a case of wine.  We use Mavrodaphne of Patras, a sweet red Greek wine.  If you have any questions or would like to know specifically how to donate, talk with Todd Wiblin of Fr. Ignatius.
Benefit the Church When You Go Out to Eat-
The Hamburg Inn restaurant in Iowa City has a program whereby they donate 10%, a tithe, of your purchases to the church of your choice.  In order for St. Raphael Church to benefit, just remember to bring in a copy of the printed bulletin from a recent Sunday (they are on the small round tables at the back of the church nave on Sundays during Liturgy) and give it to the staff when you pay your bill.  Ten percent of your meal cost will then be donated to St. Raphael.  For more information on this, go to: http://hamburginn.com/~hamburg/hamburg-tithe  If anyone is aware of similar programs offered by other local businesses, please let Fr. Ignatius know.
Sunday School Beginning Soon-
We plan to have a kick-off celebration for our Sunday School program from 1PM-4PM on Saturday, September 8.  Sunday School for students pre-K through high school will begin after Liturgy on Sunday, September 9.  Alli Rockwell has begun to distribute enrollment forms.  Please contact her if you have not received on yet.  The Sunday School program is in need of more helpers.  Please consider lending your time to make our Sunday School program even better than it was last year.  Speak with Lori Branch if you are interested in helping.
"Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer" Film Showing-
St. Raphael Church is sponsoring a free public showing of the 114 minute documentary film "Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer" at the Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room A, at 7PM on Tuesday, September 25.  The filmakers take their viewers to the Middle East, the Mediterranean area and Eastern Europe, introducing viewers to hermits, monks, nuns and clergymen as they seek to find out how and why the Jesus Prayer has been a mainstay of Orthodox spirituality for hundreds of years.  Fr. Ignatius will introduce the film and facilitate a brief discussion afterward.  Plan to come and bring some friends!
Evangelism Bible Verse-
This week's verse:  "Then He said to them all: 'If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.'" (Luke 9:23)

Food for Thought-

“To be a Christian is to share, at one and the same time, in the self-emptying and sacrifice of the Cross, and in the overwhelming joy of the Transfiguration and the Resurrection.  To be transfigured with Christ does not mean that we escape all suffering; it means that we are to find transfiguration in the suffering. The transfigured Christ offers not a way around but through.”

Metropolitan Kallistos Ware, In Communion, Fall 2006, pp. 7-8
